PHARMACOL. Latex extrêmement vénéneux produit par l'antiaris toxicaria et utilisé pour son action toxique ou thérapeutique :
• On peut distinguer trois manières principales d'agir sur les êtres vivants :
1 — On agit par des modificateurs directs, poison ou médicaments. On agit alors sur un élément organique et l'effet produit est le trouble général que détermine la diminution, l'excès ou l'absence d'action de cet élément. (Exemple : curare, strychnine, antiar, venin de crapaud.) De cette manière, qui est la plus facile, on agit temporairement sur l'organisme ...

Rem. 1. Attesté ds la plupart des dict. gén. du XIXe et du XXe s. 2. On dit aussi upas antiar (cf. LITTRÉ-ROBIN 1865, LITTRÉ, Nouv. Lar. ill.). 3. Antiar peut désigner aussi l'arbre qui produit ce latex. La forme antiaris est plus usitée dans ce sens précis. 4. On extrait de l'antiar le poison appelé antiarine.
PRONONC. ET ORTH. — Seule transcription ds LITTRÉ : an-ti-ar. BOISTE 1823 et Ac. abr. 1832 écrivent antiare. LITTRÉ, s.v. antiar renvoie à upas antiar (cf. aussi QUILLET 1965).

Forme abrégée du lat. sc. antiaris toxicaria proposé par le voyageur et botaniste fr. Leschenault de la Tour [1773-1826], Mémoire sur l'Antiaris toxicaria ds Annales du Museum t. 16, p. 470 (d'apr. Gde Encyclop.) pour désigner l'arbre qui, en malais, se nomme antjar, , LOK. 1927, n° 85; le poison provenant de l'arbre est dit en malais upas [« poison »] (Ibid., n° 2136), d'où le fr. oupas, upas, l'angl. upas (1783, NED).
